How do I get started? What do I need to buy to make a light show?

Modified on Tue, 11 Nov at 11:39 AM

Light shows and displays vary from house/building size, to budget, to expectation of the end result so we tend to suggest that people join the ELF Facebook group - a wonderful community of people all over the UK and Europe who range from beginners to those in their 8th or 9th year. The advice, support and help you can find here is invaluable. We also offer professional services with our experienced third party associates and this is a per hour service which we sell on our website - this is for people who have more questions and/or want one to one support to help get set up and is all done over the phone and/or Zoom. However if you want a complete turnkey solution with design and installation, we can refer to one of several recommended businesses to assist with this.

Please make sure to answer all the questions when applying to join the group:-

Each January we start a new weekly training session on Thursdays (via Zoom) which runs through how to design, create, install and run a light show yourself. You can find details of this on the group and also past recordings of sessions from the last few years (2023 was a particularly good year).

Through this link you will find the ELF Guide to getting started -  www.elfguide.co.uk . Once you have read the guide and posted on the group you will have a good idea of what you need to buy to get started. We sell module packs which are great for beginners and can be found here  https://buildalightshow.com/65-starter-packs. You will need a show control module plus one or more of the modules (the show control is like the engine but you need the rest of the car which is the module packs (these include the pixels, mounts, controller, power supply etc - please read the product descriptions for all the included items in a module). Many people like the medium show module as their first purchase. This is not a plug and play hobby so although the starter kit modules make things much easier (and come with some additional help via a webinar - see the show control module product description) there is still a lot to learn.

You can also find lots of information on our website:-

For good informative videos please take a look at https://gregmacaree.com/archive/ - we have worked with Greg for many years and his videos are very useful.

We also run an annual event alongside the ELF group called the ELF Mini which is held in Coventry and is also great to help with learning new things in the hobby and to get some bargains in our auction  https://www.elfmini.com/
